Did you ever wonder what those visions of dancing sugar plums looked like? Maybe you envisioned whole, purple plums, like bouncing fruit twirling into and around one another. Trader Joe’s looked into it, and found that when “A Visit From St. Nicholas” was penned by Moore, sugar plums were not plums, at all! They were comfit, or little candy confections of dried fruits or nuts coated in a sugary layer.
If this bursts your bubble, TJ’s got something bubbly to make up for it: Trader Joe’s Sugar Plum Sparkling Beverage. No, this is a not a beverage made of melted candies. The retailer took liberties with the sugar plum concept (as many others have done in modern times), and created a drink that is literally plum-based. Carbonated water is combined with plum juice and white grape juice concentrates. This 50% juice/50% sparkling water makes for the ideal seasonal swig that is lower in sugar than 100% juice would be. And, it’s a festive, light-red color that tastes exactly how you imagined those dreamy, bouncy, twirly sugar plums would have. Chill it and serve (with a fresh cranberry garnish or a sprig of fresh mint) to children and adults alike.
Trader Joe’s is selling 750mL bottles of Trader Joe’s Sugar Plum Sparkling Beverage for $2.99 each (plus deposit where required). Buy three bottles and if you know a good juggler, they might be able to make these Sugar Plums dance over all of your beloved household’s heads. On second thought, bad idea.
