For the eighth year in a row America’s largest traditional grocer, Kroger has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index. The Index is designed to recognize companies that are committed to sustainable business practices.

The index consists of North American companies that Sustainable Asset Management determines are leaders. Members are the top 20% of the largest 600 North American companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index, ranked by long-term economic, environmental, and social criteria.

Kroger’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative and environmental and recycling efforts are among the keys to its ranking. Kroger’s score has climbed in each of the past four years.

Among its key accomplishments, Kroger:

• Set a goal of achieving 100% recyclable, compostable and reusable packaging for its private brands.
• Diverted 80% of waste from landfills in 2019 and was aiming for a goal of diverting 90% in 2020.
• Donated nearly 500 million meals in 2019 and had already topped its goal of donating 1 billion meals over four years through 2020.
• Set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from operations by 30% by 2030 from its 2018 levels.
• Was ahead of pace to recycle 200 million more pounds of plastic cumulatively by 2020 than it did in 2016.
• The index is available for investors to trade. It rose 13.7% last year.
