British retailer Marks & Spencer (M&S) is expanding its private brand frozen garlic bread food waste initiative to an additional 125 stores this April. At the end of each day, unsold baguettes and boules – baked in-store daily – are prepared and filled with garlic butter, and then sold as frozen garlic bread from £1, with an extended shelf life of 30 days. In an industry-first, British grocer Tesco has begun recycling used plastic food trays back into packaging - creating a fully circular packaging solution for its range of core chilled ready meals. UK retailer Sainsbury’s has announced that it's by Sainsbury’s whole chicken Retail-owned Brand (private brand) range is now trayless after the retailer removed single-use plastic trays from its packaging. Using a minimum of 50% less plastic, the change is estimated to save 140 tons of plastic annually.
